Introduction

In 1949, three founders of Chang Chun—Mr. M.K. Liao, Mr. S.H. Lin, and Mr. S.Y. Cheng—worked diligently day and night, maintaining a long-term and seamless collaboration. Over six decades, Chang Chun's annual surplus grew from an initial approximate 2,000 yuan to nearly 3 billion, establishing an admirable success story of partnership. Starting with imported raw materials for plastic processing, Chang Chun's first product was soon followed by a breakthrough in the following year: utilizing discarded wood chips and powder from the Forestry Research Institute, combined with self-produced phenolic resin, to manufacture bakelite powder. This made Chang Chun Taiwan's first plastic production factory. Three years later, urea molding material was successfully developed, marking the beginning of Taiwan's thermosetting plastic industry's phase of replacing imported products. In 1953, Chang Chun introduced another product pivotal to Taiwan's economic development: waterproof urea glue for plywood adhesion. Its excellent water resistance and waterproof functionality immediately replaced the commonly used starch paste, significantly enhancing the quality of Taiwanese-made plywood. This innovation helped Taiwan dominate the global plywood market, earning foreign exchange and further laying the blueprint for Chang Chun's prosperous growth in the years to come. To avoid dependence on critical raw materials, Chang Chun expanded upstream, beginning construction of a formaldehyde plant in the early 1960s. With a stable supply of main raw materials, and in response to industry needs, Chang Chun launched a series of formaldehyde-based products in the 1960s, including phenolic glue with superior waterproofing for plywood, heat-resistant and aesthetically pleasing melamine molding powder, and paper strengthening resin. These developments solidified Chang Chun's robust technological foundation, paving the way for continued diversification and sustainable growth.
